Iraq completes investigation into thousands of ISIS detainees formerly held in Syria – report

Iraq has completed investigations into approximately 5,700 ISIS detainees transferred from Syria earlier this year. These individuals, primarily men, were held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) since 2019 before their transfer to Iraq, facilitated by US Central Command. The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq announced the conclusion of the "interrogation phase" and referred the suspects to trial. "The investigations led to identifying several ISIS commanders, including top-ranking figures, who were involved in 'crimes at the international level,'" according to the council, with at least six suspects linked to the Yazidi genocide. While some detainees will return to their home countries, over 450 Syrians will be released and repatriated. Iraq has also rehabilitated over 20,000 Iraqi nationals returning from Syria's al-Hol camp.
