The leaders of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland signed a declaration of intent in Cardiff, calling for referenda on independence from the United Kingdom. This "separatists' summit" brought together Scottish National Party leader John Swinney, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill, all of whom head their respective devolved governments. The declaration, which did not set a clear timetable, aims to pressure the central government in London, which opposes such referenda. The leaders pledged to strengthen cooperation and reject "Westminster's broken economic model," with O'Neill stating, "Our common cause here is that Westminster does not and will never serve our people well." The declaration also asserted that "the future of our nations belong in the European Union."
