Israel braces for unusual weekend storm as authorities warn of flooding, flash floods

Israel is preparing for an unusual and severe rainstorm expected to hit this weekend, with the peak anticipated overnight between Saturday and Sunday. The Israel Fire and Rescue Authority has heightened readiness due to concerns over flash floods and urban flooding, particularly in the northern coast, Sharon region, greater Tel Aviv, and the Shfela. Meteorological Service Director Dr. Amir Givati described it as "an unprecedented rain event for this time of year." Forecasts indicate wind gusts of 40-50 kph and 20-30 millimeters of rain along the coast within a short period, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and hail. Eric Leibovitz, CEO of the Yarkon Drainage and Streams Authority, warned that the Ayalon Highway could face closures more frequently due to reduced capacity and intense rainfall, potentially leading to flooding in previously unaffected neighborhoods in the greater Tel Aviv area.
