Israel eyes 2027 rollout for Level 4 autonomous vehicles after UN breakthrough

Israel anticipates implementing regulations for Level 4 autonomous vehicles by the second half of 2027, according to the Ministry of Transport. This follows a recent breakthrough where the UN's central standardization body (UNECE) approved a comprehensive international regulation for fully autonomous systems, which Israeli sources describe as a "breakthrough that will accelerate the process." This new framework defines safety requirements, uniform approval processes, and mandates data recording systems, ensuring autonomous driving systems function "at a level of safety that is at least equal to that of a skilled human driver." The standard is expected to be adopted in Israel, providing a basis for import permits for Level 4 vehicles. Initial adoption is projected for commercial fleets like robotaxis and autonomous shuttles, with Cross Israel already tendering for trials in the Golan Heights.
