Israel Festival honors Oct. 7 hero Aner Shapiro with art for social change

The Israel Festival will honor Aner Shapiro, a Jerusalem artist and musician killed on October 7 while saving others, with a "Creators of Impact" hackathon. This event, part of the festival's VERSE program on August 11-12, aims to use art for social change, reflecting Shapiro's belief in art's power to unite and heal. Ten artists and ten nonprofit organizations will collaborate to develop artistic projects addressing social problems, with one project receiving funding. The participating organizations cover a wide range of issues, from supporting at-risk youth and refugees to promoting Jewish-Arab connections and aiding wounded soldiers. The VERSE program, organized by the Israel Festival, the Aner Shapiro Association, and JDC-Israel, will also feature music, film, exhibitions, and discussions, including a special edition of Jerusalem Story. The initiative seeks to continue Shapiro's legacy by demonstrating that "art can do more than reflect the society around it, that it can also help change it."
