Israel rejects reports Khamenei fled Iran: ‘He is wounded and giving orders’

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the condition and whereabouts of Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, following his injury during Operation Lion's Roar. While Saudi broadcaster Al Hadath, citing an Israeli security source, claimed Khamenei had fled Iran and that his directives were drafted by the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Israeli officials refute this.

"He is wounded, he is alive and he continues to give orders."

According to Israeli intelligence, Khamenei is alive, wounded, and remains in Iran, continuing to issue instructions despite his injuries. His prolonged absence from public view, including his father's funeral, is attributed to security concerns and a desire to avoid assassination attempts. However, this has fueled speculation about his capacity to govern and the IRGC's increasing influence. Israeli officials believe Khamenei is physically injured and politically weak, with the IRGC, particularly Ahmad Vahidi, playing a significant role in shaping his communications and policy. While Khamenei is still involved in decision-making, his authority is seen as limited compared to his father's, making him more dependent on the security apparatus. The uncertainty surrounding his status is also part of an information campaign between Israel and Iran. Russia may soon establish direct contact with Khamenei, which would carry significant symbolic weight, signaling continued strategic partnership and allowing Khamenei to demonstrate his recognized head-of-state status.
