Israel, Russia oppose electing UN human rights chief Volker Turk to a new term

UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk faces opposition from Israel and Russia for a second four-year term, ahead of a vote on Friday. Turk, who has criticized both Russia's war in Ukraine and Israel's conduct in Gaza, was proposed for reappointment until 2030 by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. However, Russia has counter-proposed an extension of just over two months, until the end of 2026, arguing that a longer term would "deprive the new secretary-general of the opportunity to make his/her own choice." Israel also opposes a four-year extension, and the US has raised doubts, turning what was expected to be a consensus decision into a contentious vote. Turk's office stated, "I believe the high commissioner is ready to serve."
