Israel shells southern Syria as UN chief Guterres pushes ceasefire during Golan visit

Israeli forces reportedly shelled Syria's Quneitra province and conducted a ground incursion into western Daraa on Sunday, according to Syrian state broadcaster Alikhbariah TV. This occurred as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the region, including the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the occupied Golan Heights, to monitor the Syria-Israel ceasefire. Guterres, speaking in Damascus on Saturday, condemned “repeated violations of Syria's sovereignty,” stating, “Violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity are unacceptable and must cease.” He emphasized the UN's commitment to Syria's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, asserting that Syrian land “is Syrian and cannot be taken away.” There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the Israeli actions, and the Israeli military did not comment.
