Israel to produce its own JDAM bombs en masse within two years, in bid for arms independence

Israel aims to achieve mass production of its own JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) bombs within two years, a move towards greater arms independence. This initiative, which began in late 2024 under then-defense minister Yoav Gallant, accelerated significantly in 2025-2026, driven by a partial US arms freeze in May 2024. The Defense Ministry has signed major agreements with Elbit Systems, totaling approximately NIS 1 billion, to bolster self-sufficiency in munitions and raw materials. Amir Baram, Director-General of the Defense Ministry, emphasized strengthening Israel's defense production base while maintaining international cooperation. Funding for this increased production, including a substantial boost in Arrow 3 interceptor output, was largely secured through the sale of Arrow interceptors to Germany.
