Israeli athletes removed from Northern Irish triathlon amid BDS pressure, fears for safety

Four Israeli athletes were removed from the City of Derry Triathlon in Northern Ireland due to safety concerns and pressure from the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC) confirmed the removal, citing "athlete and public safety" concerns and a position against the "representation of the State of Israel in international sport." The Police Service of Northern Ireland also noted "potential protest activity" if the athletes participated. While anti-Zionist groups and local council members praised the decision as a BDS victory, pro-Israeli politicians and Jewish community leaders denounced it. Julie Middleton, a local MLA, stated the city should be one "where visitors and athletes from every background are treated with dignity." The Embassy of Israel in London called the decision "deeply troubling," asserting that "Sport should bring people together, not become a vehicle for discrimination and division."
