Israeli innovation could transform treatment for millions living with enlarged prostate

A first-in-human clinical trial for an Israeli-developed technology to treat benign enlarged prostate (BPH) has been conducted at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa. This innovative technology, developed in collaboration with Nina Medical, uses focused ultrasound delivered through a device placed on the skin, aiming to offer a less invasive alternative to current surgical procedures. BPH affects an estimated 94 million men globally aged 40 and older, often leading to urinary difficulties and other complications.
"We understood that we had to make treatment more accessible and simpler,"
said Dr. Kati Shkolnik, Nina Medical’s VP for clinical strategy. The procedure, lasting 10-30 minutes, is performed without anesthesia or hospitalization, potentially allowing treatment in a physician's clinic. Researchers hope this approach, which uses real-time ultrasound imaging and high-intensity focused ultrasound to shrink the prostate, will simplify care and reduce patient reluctance to seek treatment.
