Israel's border with Jordan vulnerable to terror infiltration, weapons smuggling, locals fear

Residents along Israel's border with Jordan fear the current security measures are insufficient against terror infiltration and weapons smuggling, despite ongoing construction of a new high-tech fence. Meir Tzur, head of the Central Arava Regional Council, highlighted the vulnerability of the existing wire fence, stating, "There's no problem crossing this twisted fence either." He also noted infrequent IDF patrols and a desire for a more permanent military presence, expressing concern that "A fence alone or technology is not the absolute solution." Local residents report a consistent flow of illegal entrants and smuggled goods, including weapons. A military source indicated that the IDF intercepts approximately 50% of smuggled items. The new security fence, featuring advanced sensors, is projected to be completed by early 2028, with defense sources emphasizing that Israel will also enhance intelligence collection rather than relying solely on the fence.
