Israel's settlement policy triggers trade restrictions from 12 nations, incl. Canada, France

Twelve nations, including Canada, France, and the UK, announced their intention to impose national restrictions on trade in goods from Israeli settlements. This joint decision, confirmed on Tuesday, stems from concerns that Israel's actions in the West Bank "damage the possibility of realizing the two-state solution," citing "unprecedented levels of settler violence and settlement expansion."

• The countries, which also include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden, called on Israel to halt settlement expansion and ensure accountability for settler violence.
• France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated, "France is going to put an end to its commerce with Israeli settlements in Palestine, along with 11 other countries which have also undertaken similar engagements."
• While the exact details of the trade bans are still being finalized, they will require differentiation between goods from West Bank settlements and products made in Israel, with a religious exemption also expected.
