Jerusalem teacher’s vision improved from 10% to 90% after Hadassah surgery

A 38-year-old Jerusalem teacher, Aya, experienced a significant improvement in her vision after undergoing a corneal allogeneic intrastromal ring segment (CAIRS) implantation at Hadassah Medical Center. Suffering from advanced keratoconus, which had reduced her vision to approximately 10% and made daily activities difficult, Aya received a ring made from donated human corneal tissue. This procedure, performed by Prof. David Smadja and Dr. Itay Lavy, reshaped and stabilized her cornea. Aya, who remained awake during the surgery, noted, "I felt my vision improve even during the operation." Post-surgery, her vision with glasses increased to about 90%, and she regained her independence, returning to teaching, computer work, and driving.
