Jewish WWII British special forces veteran who fought against Nazis in Africa dies, aged 100
Cairo-born Jack Mann served as a radio operator in a reconnaissance and raiding unit formed to fight Nazis in Africa, later joining the SAS and SBS, including a posting in Mandatory Palestine.
Jack Mann, a Cairo-born Jewish British World War II veteran, recently passed away at the age of 100. Mann, who enlisted at 17, was the last surviving member of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), a reconnaissance unit that fought Nazis in North Africa. He also served in the Special Air Service (SAS), Special Boat Service (SBS), and Special Operations Executive (SOE), undertaking missions across the Middle East and North Africa, including British Mandatory Palestine. Mann joined the army after learning about the Holocaust, stating, "I said I was going to help [fight him]." Despite his extensive service, he remained humble, saying, "I can't say I'm a hero. My job was communications, and that's what I did."
