Jon Ossoff broke faith with Israel – and lost his Jewish supporters in Georgia – opinion

Senator Jon Ossoff has reportedly lost significant support from his Jewish constituents in Georgia due to his November 2024 vote to block some weapons transfers to Israel. This action, taken 13 months after October 7, was perceived by many as prioritizing "virtue signaling" over Israel's defense during a critical period. Nearly 50 Georgia Jewish organizations and 22 rabbis formally rebuked Ossoff, challenging his claim of an "ironclad" commitment to Israel's security. The publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times also accused him of "lying" about his support.

"I cannot overstate how upset Georgia's Jewish community – especially Democrats – is with our senators."

Critics argue there is a crucial difference between criticizing an Israeli government and disarming the nation. Furthermore, Ossoff's silence on a Democratic candidate with a Nazi symbol tattoo and his endorsement of a Michigan Senate nominee who questions Israel's right to exist have further alienated his Jewish supporters, leading many to conclude that his loyalty is unreliable.
