Killing of Malta journalist related to gov't corruption investigation, son says in court – report

The 2017 murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia is reportedly linked to her investigation into government corruption, her son, Matthew Caruana Galizia, testified in court on Monday, according to The Guardian. Matthew, a software engineer, stated that his mother was killed while probing a company, Electrogas, partially owned by businessman Yorgen Fenech, who is accused of ordering the assassination. Matthew discovered thousands of emails on Electrogas servers, which he shared with his mother, revealing alleged evidence of Fenech's intent to bribe the Maltese government for a project contract. Matthew described the government's tendering process as "corrupt." He recounted the day of the murder, stating, "I saw pieces of metal and flesh. My eyes followed the smoke, and I saw a huge ball of fire. I ran towards it." Matthew has since dedicated himself to seeking justice for his mother, leaving his career to pursue this mission. Fenech denies the murder charges, and the trial is ongoing.
