Knesset approves largest reform of Israel’s wounded veterans system in decades

The Knesset has approved a major reform of Israel’s rehabilitation system for wounded soldiers and security personnel, the largest overhaul in decades. This initiative, based on recommendations from a government-appointed committee, will transform the Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department into a national authority with expanded powers and staff. The reform aims to address the unprecedented demand following the war with Hamas, which has seen over 26,000 individuals enter the system since October 7, 2023, with 65% receiving treatment for psychological trauma. The changes are designed to reduce administrative delays, improve access to medical and psychological care, and simplify the process of receiving benefits. Key measures include a case-management system with professional coordinators, automated systems for eligibility, and the integration of AI tools. Additionally, the Knesset passed separate legislation formally recognizing "combat trauma" as a condition under Israeli law, providing a clearer legal framework for individuals suffering from PTSD due to combat experiences. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated, "The State of Israel owes them a deep debt. We cherish them, embrace them and their families, and are committed to standing by them all the way."
