Israeli officials claim the Lebanese Army is “not doing enough” to disarm Hezbollah in a pilot program launched on July 20, 2026. The initiative involves the IDF withdrawing from and transferring security responsibility to the Lebanese Army in three southern Lebanese villages: Bir al-Sana, Sarifa, and Zawtar al-Gharbiyah. While the Lebanese Army has uncovered some weapons caches, an Israeli official stated, “it is still not enough,” emphasizing that the true test will be whether they confront Hezbollah infrastructure. Expansion of the program is contingent on full demilitarization by the Lebanese Army. Conversely, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun asserted that progress has been made in negotiations with Israel, noting a decrease in Israeli strikes and stating, “Since the framework agreement was signed, the scale of Israeli strikes has decreased, allowing Lebanese people to return and enjoy their country.”
