Lebanese politician says Shiite community is victim of Hezbollah, calls for ‘intifada’ – report

Kataeb leader Sami Gemayel has called for an "intifada" (uprising) by Lebanon's Shiite population against Hezbollah, according to Lebanese media reports. Gemayel stated that the Shiite community is "held hostage" by Hezbollah, which he believes acts on instructions from Iran, making Lebanon's situation dependent on wider regional developments. He approached Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to discuss separating the Shiite community from Hezbollah, but Berri, a close ally of Hezbollah, reportedly shut down the discussion. Gemayel's comments were made days before reports emerged about third nations monitoring Hezbollah's disarmament.
