Mamdani compares criticism of his Israel stance to questions faced by Mandela

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently compared the scrutiny of his criticism of Israel to questions faced by Nelson Mandela regarding his support for the Palestinian cause. Speaking at the Nelson Mandela Global Leadership Forum, Mamdani referenced a 1990 interview where Ted Koppel asked Mandela if his solidarity with Palestinians would alienate the Jewish community. Mamdani stated, "Did that solidarity, he asked, mean Madiba was willing to alienate the Jewish community?" He drew a parallel, noting he is frequently asked if "opposing Israeli war crimes and violations of international law somehow makes you hateful toward a people." Mamdani has faced criticism from pro-Israel groups for his stance, including his support for the BDS movement and refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, while maintaining his commitment to protecting Jewish New Yorkers and combating antisemitism. An AP-NORC survey showed Mamdani with a higher favorability rating among Jewish Americans than Benjamin Netanyahu.
