Man shot by ICE in Austin says he is held in detention with bullet in his back

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a Venezuelan man shot by a federal immigration agent in Texas, claims he is being held in an ICE detention center with a bullet in his back and is not receiving adequate medical care. Speaking via phone from the South Texas ICE Processing Center, Perez, 28, stated, "I'm not doing well because of the gunshot I received," and reported sleeping on the floor. His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, said Perez was released from the hospital within four hours despite the bullet. Perez alleges he was shot in his car by agents who did not identify themselves, contradicting Austin police and a New York Times report that he fled after being pulled over by ICE agents who had identified him and discovered a deportation order. Neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security has commented on the shooting circumstances, though DHS confirmed Perez was in the U.S. illegally with a final removal order.
