Math teacher arrested over alleged sexual offenses against student

A mathematics teacher in Lod, in his 20s, was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of repeatedly committing sexual offenses against one of his students. Police opened an investigation after receiving information at the Tel Aviv North Police Station. The suspect, who teaches at a recently opened middle school, reportedly linked himself to the alleged offenses during questioning. His attorney, Rotem Sari, stated that his client "claims that the relations were consensual." The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court extended the suspect's detention by five days on Thursday. Police requested permission to publish the suspect's name to identify potential additional victims, but the court issued a gag order. Attorney Lili Getz Horowitz, director of the Takana Forum, described the allegations as "a profound betrayal of the trust of the child and of society as a whole."
