Merz says Israel 'wouldn't exist' without German aid

He emphasized, "we will always support the State of Israel’s right to exist, including militarily." This assertion contrasts with consistent rejections from Israeli prime ministers, including Benjamin Netanyahu, who maintain Israel's survival is due to its own efforts. Merz, considered pro-Israel, acknowledged a brief halt in ammunition supply in August 2025 due to Israeli military actions in Gaza. Historian Rafael Medoff disputed Merz's claim, noting Germany only began significant arms sales in 1962, and Israel existed long before. Germany supplied 31% of Israel's defense imports in 2025, including its submarine fleet, while Israel also exports major defense systems to Germany.
