More than 260,000 people evacuated as Typhoon Bavi brings severe floods to mainland China

Typhoon Bavi, the most powerful storm to hit mainland China this year, has caused the evacuation of over 260,000 people in northeastern Liaoning province due to severe flooding. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue, with extreme downpours in some areas. The typhoon, which formed 13 days ago and is the longest-lasting tropical cyclone in the Asia-Pacific region this year, has disrupted transport and led to school closures in cities like Shenyang and Jilin. Chinese meteorologists attribute its longevity to an unusually well-preserved warm core, allowing it to retain moisture as it moves north towards the Korean peninsula.
