Motive behind Ontario synagogue shooting attack not yet determined by Canadian police

Canadian police have not yet formally determined the motive behind a shooting outside Congregation Beth Jacob in Belleville, Ontario, on Yom Kippur. The incident involved 29-year-old Sean Ward, who remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after allegedly firing a shotgun at an on-duty police officer, Jeff Smith, who was guarding the synagogue. Officer Smith, a 13-year veteran, was seriously wounded but is in stable condition.

Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis stated it was "too early to determine that this was a hate crime," but noted the location and timing "point in that direction."

While no worshipers were injured, Israel's Ambassador to Canada Iddo Moed and the Israeli Foreign Ministry described the event as a "terror attack," citing an escalation in Canada's antisemitism crisis. Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the police actions, while Belleville Police are conducting a parallel investigation into the suspect's motive.
