Mount Etna volcano ash cloud halts arrivals at Sicily's Catania airport

Arrival flights at Catania airport in eastern Sicily were suspended until 1500 GMT on Monday due to volcanic ash from a new eruption of Mount Etna. Mount Etna, a highly active volcano, frequently disrupts air traffic at Catania, Sicily's main airport. Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that the latest eruptive phase was continuing from vents at 2,750 meters and 2,360 meters, creating lava flows and fields. The INGV's Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) remained at the highest alert level, red, indicating ongoing hazards from ash emissions. Airport operator SAC advised passengers to "check the status of their flight with their airline before heading to the airport."
