NATO members discuss Strait of Hormuz options without alliance involvement

NATO's top commander, US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, hosted a videoconference on August 26 to discuss potential contributions from interested allied nations to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. A spokesperson clarified that "this is not a NATO mission," but the alliance facilitated the meeting due to its ability to coordinate member capabilities. The discussions focused on efforts by countries like France and Britain to form a coalition of approximately a dozen nations to ensure safe passage through the strait, which previously handled about a fifth of global oil trade. Any long-term solution would require Iranian agreement.
