Nazi war criminal's chilling account of Warsaw Ghetto destruction reaches English readers

Jürgen Stroop, the Nazi commander responsible for the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto and the killing of over 50,000 Jews, provided a detailed account of his actions to Polish resistance leader Kazimierz Moczarski. This occurred while they shared a cell in Mokotów Prison for 255 days in 1949, as Stroop awaited execution. Moczarski documented these confessions in his influential book, “Conversations with an Executioner,” which offers insight into Nazi psychology and motivations. Despite being censored for years by Poland's Communist regime due to Moczarski's past as a resistance fighter, the book has now been published for the first time in an uncensored English translation by Steerforth, an imprint of Pushkin Press. The book's English translator, Sean Casper Bye, notes its significance as a central historical source that has long struggled for full publication, providing a rare window into the Warsaw Ghetto's destruction.
