Netanyahu’s ‘Wing of Zion’ stays grounded but costs Israel millions

Israel's official state aircraft, "Wing of Zion," has seen limited operational use due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's restricted travel options following an international arrest warrant. Despite its grounding for training, maintenance, and inspections, the aircraft continues to incur significant costs, totaling approximately 60 million shekels ($19.67 million) between 2023 and 2025. Supporters, however, argue it remains a crucial strategic asset, citing its secure communication capabilities and the fact that its maintenance contract, established a decade ago, results in lower costs when the plane is less active. Officials involved in the project stated, "On the contrary, when the plane is not active, it costs the taxpayer less." The Prime Minister's Office emphasized its role as "a strategic asset of the State of Israel" for operational continuity and immediate availability, particularly during wartime.
