Nine Indonesians sue Israel over Gaza flotilla detention, abuse

Nine Indonesian activists, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, have filed a criminal complaint with Indonesia’s Attorney General’s Office against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli government, and military members. They allege kidnapping and abuse during their four-day detention in May after Israeli forces intercepted their humanitarian aid flotilla en route to Gaza. The activists submitted photographs of injuries, medical reports, and individual accounts as evidence, with one volunteer stating, “We came today to report what we experienced after being kidnapped and imprisoned by Israel for four days.” Their lawyer, Shaleh Al Ghifari, reported some volunteers endured electric shocks, beatings, and harassment. Former Attorney General Marzuki Darusman cited Indonesia’s new Criminal Code and the principle of universal jurisdiction, acknowledging the need for diplomatic support. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry previously condemned the treatment as inhumane, working through third countries like Türkiye to secure the activists' release and deportation.
