No 200,000 votes? Drop out: Israel’s small parties face a much higher election threshold

A new analysis by the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel indicates that the electoral threshold for entering the Knesset will significantly increase in the upcoming election, primarily due to a growing eligible voting population. The number of votes required to cross the threshold is projected to rise from approximately 155,000 in 2022 to potentially 171,000-195,000, depending on voter turnout. This higher bar could challenge several smaller parties, potentially leaving hundreds of thousands of votes unrepresented and impacting the formation of the next government.

“If your party does not have 200,000 votes, do the right thing and leave the race,”

said Professor Alex Weinreb, author of the Taub Center paper, emphasizing that leaders of small parties should consider mergers to avoid wasting votes and to prevent damage to public confidence in democracy.
