'Not going to happen,' US envoy says of Mamdani threat to arrest Netanyahu

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz dismissed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's threat to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the upcoming U.N. General Assembly in early September as "pure political theater." Waltz explained that the U.S. is not party to the Rome Statute, and diplomatic protections and head-of-state immunity apply to visiting heads of government, with federal authority superseding local wishes. Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon criticized Mamdani for failing to govern New York and inciting hostility against Israel instead of addressing local issues like rising antisemitism. Mark Treyger, CEO of JCRC-NY, also stated that "New Yorkers elected a mayor to make our city safer, stronger and more affordable. Not to conduct foreign policy."
