On the 54th anniversary, Israel honors those murdered in the 1972 Olympics

Israel recently observed the 54th anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, where 11 members of its Olympic delegation were murdered by Palestinian terrorists. The annual memorial ceremony, held at Yud-Alef Square in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, honored the victims and reaffirmed Israel's commitment to their legacy through sport. Attendees included Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar, Israel Olympic Committee President Yael Arad, family members of the victims, and Germany's Deputy Ambassador to Israel, Helena Marks.

"Fifty-four years have passed, and we continue to remember and remind the world of the 11 members of the Israeli delegation who were brutally murdered in Munich," said Yael Arad.

Speakers emphasized the ongoing relevance of the tragedy amidst rising antisemitism and efforts to delegitimize Israel in sports. They stressed the importance of Israeli athletes' presence on international stages as a testament to resilience and a fight against extremism. The ceremony also featured the lighting of memorial candles and the laying of wreaths, with current Olympians pledging to honor the victims' memory through continued sporting excellence and by proudly representing Israel.
