Over 30 start-ups return Israel's northern tech hub as new recovery plan takes shape

A long-term development plan for northern Israel, aiming to transform the Galilee into a major innovation hub, was presented last week in New York to business leaders and American Jewish community figures. Hosted by Erel Margalit of Margalit Startup City, the initiative seeks to attract companies, entrepreneurs, investment, and young families by creating new growth engines and high-quality jobs. The strategy, led by Margalit Startup City Galil, integrates technology, research, academia, advanced agriculture, local business development, education, and culture. Despite wartime disruptions that led to business closures and start-ups relocating, 32 start-ups have since returned to the Galilee, with the innovation center supporting over 150 start-ups, creating more than 50 jobs, and securing approximately $3 million in grants. As Margalit stated, "If we simply restore the Galilee to what it was before the war, we haven't solved the problem. We need to create new growth engines, high-quality jobs and opportunities that will encourage people to build their future in the region." The plan also includes strengthening local businesses through initiatives like Galilocals, expanding educational and leadership programs for youth, and developing women's leadership through Galiladies. Additionally, a performing arts and cultural center, StartArt, is planned to encourage younger residents to remain in the region, emphasizing that investing in people and communities is as crucial as investing in technology.
