Poll of Jewish-Americans reveals complex attitudes toward Israel, antisemitism

A recent Associated Press-NORC survey of over 1,000 Jewish adults in the U.S. reveals complex attitudes toward Israel, antisemitism, and political support. The poll, conducted to understand views on Israel's military actions in Gaza and experiences with prejudice, highlighted several key findings:

• While 8 in 10 religiously affiliated Jewish adults initially justified Israel's immediate response to the October 7 attack, only about half now justify ongoing operations in Gaza. Among non-religiously affiliated Jewish adults, only 2 in 10 find ongoing operations acceptable.
• Approximately 6 in 10 Jewish adults perceive prejudice against Jewish people as a serious problem in the U.S., with about one-third feeling unsafe.
• Few Jewish adults believe either Donald Trump or the Democratic and Republican parties are doing a good job supporting Jewish people in the U.S.
• About half of Jewish adults do not consider protesting an event supportive of Israel to be a form of antisemitism, though 4 in 10 do.
• Younger Jewish adults prioritize supporting Israel less in their Jewish identity compared to older Jewish adults, instead emphasizing aspects like celebrating Jewish holidays.
