Rabbi warns ring proposals could accidentally create a Jewish marriage, need divorce if called off

Rabbi Avraham Deri, Chief Rabbi of Beersheba, warned that public marriage proposals involving a ring exchange in front of witnesses could inadvertently create a halachically binding Jewish marriage (kiddusin). He stated that if such a proposal is later called off, the couple "could be required to obtain a get" (religious divorce). The Religious Services Ministry clarified that the halachic concern depends on specific circumstances, including words spoken, ring exchange method, and witness status, advising consultation with a rabbi if doubt arises.
