Randi Weingarten attacks Trump as teachers’ union weighs anti-Israel resolutions

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), used her keynote address at the union's national convention in Washington, D.C. on Thursday to criticize U.S. President Donald Trump and advocate for Democratic control of Congress. She stated, "The president and his cronies are abusing government powers to punish political opponents." Weingarten announced the AFT's "Democracy Defenders election protection program" to recruit 5,000 members to safeguard voting rights and committed to the union's "most ambitious election program ever." Her remarks coincided with delegates preparing to debate multiple anti-Israel resolutions. Corey DeAngelis of the Heritage Foundation criticized Weingarten's speech, asserting it had "nothing to do with improving student outcomes" and that the union's resolutions, which he described as "a declaration of war on the Trump administration," included calls for abolishing ICE and cutting the military budget.
