Rubio, Aoun discuss implementing Lebanon-Israel framework deal

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington on Sunday to discuss the implementation of the June 26 framework agreement with Israel. Rubio commended Aoun's government for its work to "reclaim their country and advance towards peace," affirming U.S. commitment to the agreement and Lebanon's security. Aoun stated Lebanon's position should align with the U.S. approach, starting with an Israeli withdrawal from the first pilot zone in Southern Lebanon, as outlined in the U.S.-brokered deal to remove Hezbollah from the border.

• Aoun requested increased U.S. support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and deeper U.S. economic engagement, particularly in energy, telecommunications, and transportation.
• Rubio indicated Washington seeks to attract U.S. investment and explore restarting direct flights between the U.S. and Lebanon.
• Aoun is also scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
