SCOOP: NY state to distribute $70 million to nonprofits vulnerable to hate crimes

New York state will distribute $70 million to 290 nonprofit community-based organizations vulnerable to hate crimes, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. This funding, the largest in the state's Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes program history, addresses a rise in antisemitism, with Jewish communities being targets of 42% of confirmed hate crimes in New York City last month. Hochul stated, "The Jewish community has been subjected to horrible, horrible acts of antisemitism. It's on the rise, and we have to do something about it." Organizations can use grants up to $250,000 for security enhancements like locks, alarms, and cybersecurity. Additionally, State Police will increase patrols around synagogues during the High Holidays to provide a sense of security.
