Secret 1993 Peres-Hussein meeting helped pave way for Israel-Jordan peace, revealed documents show

Newly revealed documents from a secret November 1993 meeting between then-Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Jordan's King Hussein show how they laid groundwork for the Israel-Jordan peace treaty. Released by the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation on the 10th anniversary of Peres's death, the documents detail a clandestine meeting in Amman where Peres's appearance was altered to ensure secrecy. King Hussein, viewing Peres as a creative thinker, expressed urgency, stating, "Perhaps I have only a year or two left; I will put everything on the line." Peres presented a vision for regional economic cooperation. This meeting, a culmination of prior secret contacts, led to an unofficial document summarizing discussions, which Peres intended to share with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Less than a year later, in October 1994, Israel and Jordan signed their peace treaty.
