Six French Islamic State suspects could face death penalty as Iraqi court opens trial

An Iraqi court began the trial of six French nationals on Sunday, accused of belonging to Islamic State. These individuals are among 47 French detainees transferred from Syrian prisons last year, a process overseen by US and Iraqi authorities. The suspects, dressed in yellow jumpsuits, arrived at the Baghdad criminal court under heavy escort. A member of the Supreme Judicial Council stated that if convicted of crimes against Iraq, the suspects "could face the death penalty." The trial was adjourned until October 5 to allow defense lawyers to review the case files. The US began transferring ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq in January due to security concerns in Syrian detention facilities.
