Some parts of your body age faster than others, Israeli study finds
Hebrew University researchers say the discovery could pave the way for new cancer treatments and earlier detection of dozens of diseases.
New research from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, led by biochemist Prof. Howard Cedar, challenges the notion that all parts of the body age uniformly. The study, published in Nature Communications, found that individual cells age at different rates, identifying a molecular "aging signature" that reveals which cells are aging fastest. Prof. Cedar stated, "The achievement shows that the way people think about aging is wrong." This discovery, based on DNA methylation—a process that turns genes on or off—suggests that aging is a mosaic of biologically young and old cells rather than a synchronized process. The findings could lead to the development of drugs that specifically target and slow down the aging process in rapidly aging cells, potentially impacting age-related diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's.
