Spain reintroduced border controls for travelers arriving from Italy, checking 199 individuals on 12 flights at its six largest airports. This action followed Italy's suspension of the EU's border-free Schengen arrangements with Spain on August 1, citing a mass migration of 72,000 people to Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on July 30. Italy's measures, which will remain until at least August 15, target non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air or sea, not EU citizens. Spain's controls will be in force until September 7. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated, "We hope to be able to lift the suspension soon, as soon as there is no longer any risk."
