Spain to establish border controls on travelers from Italy amid migration dispute

Spain announced on Friday that it would implement border controls for travelers arriving from Italy via flights and ships, effective from Saturday midnight until September 7. This decision comes amidst a dispute over irregular migration, with Spain citing "persistent irregular migratory pressure" from Italy. The measures involve passport, nationality, and visa checks for passengers from Italy. Spain stated these controls would be in place while Italy maintains its own border measures, which were initiated after approximately 72,000 migrants arrived in Spain's African enclave of Ceuta on July 30. Italy, earlier on Friday, declared it would not yield to "ultimatums or impositions" from Spain and would keep its border controls on arrivals from Spain until at least August 15, citing security, terrorism, and migration wave concerns.
