Syria arrests former officer accused of overseeing production of sarin bombs

Syrian authorities have arrested former military officer Col. Ahmad Habib Ali, accused of overseeing the production of sarin-filled bombs used in chemical attacks between 2013 and 2017. Ali, a former chemical weapons specialist, allegedly headed a department at the Scientific Studies and Research Center and supervised sarin storage and chemical production at Unit 417, including approximately 20 aerial bombs each containing 250 kilograms of sarin. This arrest marks "the beginning of the judicial process, not its conclusion," according to Syrian lawyer Louay al-Hassani, with potential charges including murder, war crimes, or crimes against humanity. Fadel Abdulghany of the Syrian Network for Human Rights called it "an important and positive step toward accountability" but emphasized the need for investigations across the entire chain of command. The arrest follows increased cooperation by Syria with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in identifying remnants of its former chemical weapons program.
