Syrian national indicted for aiding 2025 Berlin Holocaust Memorial stabbing

A Syrian national, Khalaf A., has been indicted for aiding and abetting attempted murder in connection with a 2025 stabbing at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. Germany's chief federal prosecutor announced the indictment on Wednesday, August 21, 2026, stating that Khalaf A. allegedly helped the assailant, Wassim Al M., plan and encouraged him to carry out the attack. Al M. was separately prosecuted and found guilty on March 5, 2026, by the Higher Regional Court of Berlin, receiving a 13-year prison sentence for attacking a 30-year-old Spanish tourist with a knife, causing life-threatening injuries. The prosecutor noted Al M. “acted out of radical Islamist and antisemitic motivations.” Khalaf A. has been in pretrial detention since May 27.
