Syria's Kurds demonstrate in multiple cities, government announces curfew

Syrian authorities imposed a curfew in Kobani on Monday night following attacks by Kurdish protesters on government-affiliated sites in multiple cities. The Internal Security Department announced the curfew “out of concern for the safety of citizens and to preserve security and stability” as unrest continued in Kurdish areas. Protesters reportedly burned a Syrian flag in front of a government office in Aleppo, and groups attacked internal security headquarters in Al-Hasakah and Al-Qamishli. The Hasakah Media Directorate stated, "In the city of Al-Hasakah, those groups removed the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic from one of the internal security headquarters and assaulted it." Internal security forces have reinforced their presence to contain tensions. This unrest follows increased sectarian tensions after President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government took control of the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria in early 2025.
