Teen slashed in Brooklyn synagogue by ’emotionally disturbed' fellow congregant, NYPD says

A 14-year-old boy was slashed in the hand with a "cutting instrument" inside Yeshiva Gevoah Toldos, an Orthodox synagogue in Borough Park, Brooklyn, on Monday evening. The New York Police Department identified the suspect as Krybus Shimon, 22, a fellow congregant described as an "emotionally disturbed person." Shimon was charged with assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon. The incident is not being investigated as a hate crime, and the motive remains unclear. This event follows a January incident in Borough Park, a large Orthodox Jewish community, where over 70 swastikas and "Adolf Hitler" were spray-painted in a park, leading to the arrest of two teenagers for aggravated harassment and criminal mischief as a hate crime. New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced $70 million in security funding for vulnerable institutions.
