Tova Saul, the cat rescuer of Jerusalem

Tova Saul, a Philadelphia native who immigrated to Israel over 40 years ago, has dedicated her life to rescuing cats in Jerusalem. From her apartment in the Jewish Quarter, she has helped over 1,000 orphaned kittens and injured felines, often taking them into her home for recovery and adoption. Saul recalls an incident where a kitten was trapped in a drainage pipe along the Via Dolorosa, bringing together a diverse crowd of residents and tourists who applauded its rescue. She states, "I have never in my life heard such screaming from kittens" when describing a recent rescue of two abandoned kittens. Saul emphasizes her deep-seated compassion, questioning, "What I don’t understand is how people can walk past a suffering animal and do nothing."
